OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. | Former University of Alabama softball player Mandy Burford has been hired as assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern.

Burford, a native of Anniston who batted .325 and started 62 of 65 games for the Crimson Tide last season as a senior, will join the staff of former Alabama All-American Stephanie VanBrakle as the sole full-time assistant at Birmingham-Southern, which is making the transition to non-scholarship NCAA Division III status. VanBrakle was promoted to head coach earlier this week.

Burford said she had no intentions of going into coaching until VanBrakle offered the position.

"This is not what I had planned," she said, "but I'm excited. I can't wait to get started."

Burford is in Oklahoma City as radio color commentator for UA softball games. Thursday's opener against Arizona State in the Women's College World Series will air on 1420 AM, with all other games on 90.7 FM.

Burford will start her new position immediately upon returning from the WCWS.
