ALPHARETTA, Ga. | The top-ranked University of Alabama golf team shot 6-over Monday in the opening round of the United States Collegiate Championship and is among a three-way tie for fourth place after 18 holes.

The tournament, held at the Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, Ga., began on Monday and picks up with second round play on Tuesday. The final round is on Wednesday for the tournament which features ten Top 25 ranked teams among its field of 15, including all eight of the nation’s top eight ranked collegiate golf teams.

No. 3 ranked UCLA leads the tournament after one round, shooting 1-over par, 289, on the par-72 course. No. 12 Florida State is in second at 3-over-291, and No. 6 Oklahoma State is in third at 4-over-292. A three-way tie exists at fourth at 6-over and with scores of 294 between No. 5 Southern California, East Tennessee State and No. 1 Alabama. At seventh is No. 7 and tournament host Georgia Tech, 296, followed by Georgia State, 298, tied at ninth with 302 No. 2 Georgia and Coastal Carolina, tied at 11th No. 4 Charlotte and Texas A&M, 304, at 13th No. 9 Stanford, 310, at 14th Brigham Young, 312, and at 15th Texas, 313.

UCLA’s Kevin Chappell is the top player on the leader board. He shot 4-under-68, to open play. Alabama has two golfers among the top 10 individuals with Michael Thompson tied at 5th at 1-under after he shot 71. Gator Todd is at even par, shooting 72 to place him tied at 10th. Matthew Swan joins his teammates in the Top 25 individuals. Swan is tied at 24th at 2-over par, shooting 74. Alabama’s other golfers competing include Mark Harrell who is tied at 44th at 5-over, 77, and Joseph Sykora who is tied at 66th at 9-over par after shooting 81.
