Tide golf team takes top spot at Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico | Mark Harrell shot a 5-under 67 in Saturday’s second round to help the University of Alabama golf team move into first going into today’s final round of the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club.

Alabama enters the final 18 holes at 2-under, shooting 289 on Friday and 3-under (285) on Saturday. UA leads Oklahoma State by two shots as the Cowboys, who shared the lead at 4-under with Clemson after round one, are now at even (576).

Montgomery’s Matthew Swan, who was the co-leader Friday, now leads the tournament on his own at 7-under, shooting 66-71-137. His teammate Harrell had Alabama’s lowest round of the day and made the biggest leap in the individual standings, moving from a tie at 45th to a tie at 5th after shooting 67. Michael Thompson moved up 10 spots to a tie for 24th after shooting par in the second round (74-72-146). Gator Todd is tied at 36th (74-75-149) at 5-over, and Joseph Sykora remains tied at 58th. He shot 77-75-152 and is eight over par.
