RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico | The 16th-ranked Alabama women’s golf team started its spring slate in impressive fashion atop the leaderboard of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic after round one of play Sunday at the Coco Beach Golf Course. Alabama shot a first round 5-over 293 to be tied with TCU after the first day of play.

Alabama had four members score in the top 20 out of the 93-golfer field. Junior transfer Kathleen Ekey led the charge for the Tide with a first round score of even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 7th.

Sophomore Rhea Nair followed with a score of 1-over 73 to come out of the gate in a tie for 11th place. Nair was the Tide’s top finisher at the event with a 26th place finish a year ago.

Freshman Camilla Lennarth and sophomore Helena Blomberg are tied for 17th after shooting a 2-over 74. Senior Sarah Sturm rounded out the Tide golfers with a 4-over 76 to be in a tie for 38th.

The second round starts at 8 a.m. today.
