TUSCALOOSA | Joseph Sykora, a Daphne native who will be a senior on the University of Alabama golf team this fall, has been named to the Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars team for Division I.
Sykora is a 4.0 student who graduated in May with an accounting degree. He will start graduate school at Alabama in the fall as he finishes out his playing eligibility in his final season with the Crimson Tide. Sykora, a 2005 U.S. Amateur participant and a key golfer on Alabama’s team, was named the Southeastern Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s golf in both 2006 and this year. He is a two-time ESPN Academic All-American as well. He won the individual championship at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate last fall, setting the University of Alabama individual 54-hole record at 199 to win.
On Wednesday the Southeastern Conference announced six Tide men’s golfers are among the 2007 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll award winners. Sykora is among them. The five others include Mark Harrell (management), Matt Hughes (marketing), Matthew Swan (communication studies), Michael Thompson (accounting) and Stewart Whitt (finance).
